Safe Battery Handling
Safe Battery Handling
Electric forklifts are powered by heavy lead acid batteries, weighing from 500 to 3000 pounds or more, and should only be handled by trained and authorized personnel.
A special area should be set apart for battery changing and charging. Whenever you change or charge a battery, always remember:
- Turn the truck off and set the parking brake
- Block the deadman pedal with the battery gate
- Use a battery stand and puller to switch out batteries
- Never place any metal object on top of a battery
- Make sure the charger is turned off before unplugging connectors
- Replace battery gates before travel
- Battery acid, or electrolyte, can cause serious burns if it comes in contact with your skin. Always wear the correct personal protective equipment when working with battery acid.
The following is a list of safety rules to follow in your battery charging/changing area:
- Don’t allow smoking near the battery charging area
- Wear a face shield, goggles, apron, and gloves when adding water
- Flush battery acid from the skin immediately, and contact a physician immediately if you do come in contact with battery acid
- Know the location of your eyewash station
